A special treat for those who have been with us for the past 30 years. On this episode, the original Smorgasbord Radio Show team – Chris Bockay, Peet McCain, Dave Jackson, and Jerry Malauskas – reunite together for the first time in 10 years.

Ally does not make an appearance during this episode because she could not deal with four old men going down memory lane and complaining about the current state of affairs.

Among the various topics discussed: Peet and Jerry duke it out to play the best Mr. Potter on the forthcoming SmorgShow Theater production of ”It’s a Wonderful Life”. In the spirit of that classic story, we discuss what life would have been like if there had never been a Jerry Malauskas. We discuss the culture of high school radio WDGC-FM before and after the Smorgasbord show era, and the impact General Manager Fred Moore had on us. We discuss the trend of moving away from terrestrial radio and toward internet radio and podcasting. We also discuss the current state of the music industry. On a positive note, we do not discuss any of our medical issues.

This week we devote the entire episode to our latest radio play production, “A Christmas Carol”, by Charles Dickens. It is a relatively faithful rendition of the original story, shortened to around 45 minutes in order to keep in line with our usual show length. We brought in a large cast of actors to play the many characters of the classic story. This was by far our most ambitious production which would not have been possible to pull together if we had not previously done the other old-time radio dramas from our earlier episodes, like “Sorry, Wrong Number”, “On a Country Road”, and “The Sisters”. We had a great time over the past couple weeks preparing, directing, and producing this show. We really hope you enjoy the final outcome of it.

We would like to thank all the people who made this recording possible, some of whom even braved the nasty winter weather by making the long journey to our studio to lay down their tracks. We also want to thank our loyal listeners for making 2010 a very memorable year for us as we brought you our new weekly podcast of the SmorgShow. It has been a very rewarding year and we look forward to doing more of it in 2011. Merry Christmas to all and ‘May God Bless Us Every One!’

A SmorgShow Christmas Carol

We are currently undertaking a major recording production of the classic Charles Dickens story, “A Christmas Carol”. This will be our fifth staging of an old-time drama since we began the SmorgShow Podcast in January 2010. We are hoping to have it released on our 41st episode, currently targeted for Sunday, December 19. This will be our final podcast in 2010 and we plan to be back up and running on a weekly schedule beginning January 2, 2011.

“A Christmas Carol” has been presented countless times, yet it always finds a warm place in our hearts during this time of the year. We brought in a pretty wide cast of actors for this version and we are having a blast pulling it all together. I personally think this will top any previous production we have done to date and we hope you enjoy it.

Those who have been following our show recall that we have been testing our home for radon gas. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers. It’s a radioactive gas that comes from the breakdown of the elements in the soil and can get into homes through cracks in the basement foundation or other means. The SmorgShow studio is located in our basement, so we decided to do a test back in September after someone advised us to do so.

Results from that test showed we tested slightly higher than the recommended maximum so we did a second test as a precaution. The results of the second test just came back and showed we were at 3x the recommended level and therefore we must proceed with getting this problem fixed by a licensed radon mitigation contractor (what a cool title!). Until that happens, we are moving our studio to another location.

So this week we bring you an abbreviated episode. We have another exclusive performance by Phillip Donald, Baba Gonesh presents another Indian Folk Tale about “The Little Mice and the Big Elephants”, and News Balls: Older than 52? Then you are probably grumpy, Hot Dog Heist: 10-foot weiner stand goes missing, and a man buys skeleton decorations for Halloween from a yard sale only to find the bones are real.

Growing up in the Chicago area in the 1970’s meant that if you listened to radio, you likely tuned in to hear Larry Lujack, John Landecker, Bob Sirott, and a bit later – Steve Dahl and Garry Meier. Steve and Garry were the pioneers of the “two-on-mic” conversational radio format. Here is a recording of me from 1981 interviewing Garry Meier for my high school radio project. I was the envy of my class. This was recorded in my home basement recording studio.

The Car Wash Skit (1976)

Every now and then I work up the courage to venture into my crawl space. I ran out of lazy things to do over the Thanksgiving holiday, so I decided to get productive and clean out some old junk that I have been holding onto for years. So in the process of doing just that, I came across this gem of a recording. It is the very first audio recording of me – recorded Friday July 23, 1976. This is a skit that my dad and I put together over summer vacation that year. I guess in some ways this was the official launch of my interest in broadcasting and tape recordings. I can still remember my first tape recorder.

I was fortunate enough to be able to make a digital copy of this recording because two of my tape decks didn’t even recognize the recording any longer since magnetic recordings don’t last much longer than 25 years. However, one of my tape decks came through so I was able to do the digital transfer and preserve these early memories a bit longer. Enjoy this very personal look into my childhood years.

I was living in a downtown Chicago apartment right in the middle of all the action. However, Jerry and I were getting a little tired of all the uptight Streeterville girls and their attitude. So Jerry and I put together this song in about 20 minutes. We rap about bein’ dissed by one too many chicks. This is taken from the ‘City Boyz’ video collection. Recorded in my downtown studio apartment in the fall of 1991.

The Days of Adolescence (1989) -My farewell song to the 1980′s. A song about growing up and saying goodbye to teenage life. Just before entering the 1990’s I decided to write a song that captured the essence of that period. I tried to incorporate all the main highlights and low lights from that period of my life. Every thing mentioned in this song really happened. Lyrics wise, probably my best song. I just re-mixed it with some fancy new software to double my voice during the chorus and to get rid of Don Henley in the background. Couldn’t really do too much about my being off key.

Strong Strong Man (1989) – We really loved to make fun of Rick Astley videos back during this time. So Jerry and I became ‘The Overconfident Jerks’ and did a cover of the classic Rick Astley number. We recorded this at Stratford Square Mall (1989). It was a pretty cool operation for its time. You could pick among thousands of songs and lay down your own voice tracks over the music. For about $10 you walked out with a cassette tape of your song. Here it is for your listening enjoyment.

Lost Smorg Tapes – Peet’s Private Answering Machine Messages (1986)

This is not from any of the Smorg shows, but was recently unearthed from my vault. This is a collection of goofy answering machine messages from Peet’s Bolingbrook apartment over the Summer of 1986. This really captures the flavor of that summer. I made it a point to call in with a quick 30 second message each day, and this captures some of those calls. There are a few psycho girlfriends in here to add some spice to it all.

Life after WDGC finds me at NIU campus in DeKalb, IL. I stayed away from radio during my first year, but decided to join the staff of NIU radio station WKDI-FM in the fall of 1985, my sophomore year. As a newbee to the station, I land the Sunday morning 6-9am time slot. Not exactly the best time for a college student, nor does it typically provide the best audience size. But I take it anyway, and I drag Dave Jackson with me for my first show. Here is one bit where we are on the air together. My college radio career lasted exactly two weeks. I did not like the fact that I could not do my own thing – I was forced to abide by strict station format – no personality radio. Oh – did I mention – this wasn’t even a real radio station. It did not broadcast over the airwaves. It was more like cable radio. Only those in the college dorms could pick it up.

Season 3 Episode 9: This episode of “Get a Life” is from the very last Chris and Dave show – The Final Chapter. By now, we had the delivery and timing down for this. Included here are actually two callers. The first one is by far the liveliest contestant we ever had. The second caller is Fred Moore who wins the Grand Prize for the season! He was such a good sport that evening and never said anything about us talking for six straight hours on that last episode of the Chris and Dave Smorgasbord.
